Interpretive solo is an experience and not scored or eligible for trophies/other awards.

Note: Acrobatics is defined as any 360 degree rotation when the performer’s feet are above their head. Illusions, front and back rolls are allowed, as well as partner lifts that may end up with partner’s feet over their heads!

  • Acro should be min. of 40% dance and 60% acro max.
  • Tap should not have tap sounds in the music.
  • Jazz only permits two acro tricks before marks are deducted. Simply place them in to open or specialty or acro to avoid deductions.
  • Musical Theatre: The routine must have a 60% dance and 40% other (acting or mime).
  • Song & Dance:  Studio provides the mic headpiece. This must be set up one session prior to the performance.

AGE DIVISIONS:

Determined as of Dec. 31 • Average age: mean of dancers age. Drop the decimal point. The software calculates this during registration. If there are multiple routines in the same category by the same dancers, they can enter in the age group above.

Divisions:

Mini: up to 8
Intermediate: 9-12
Senior: 13 and over.

Did you know?....StarCatchers, offers 3 days and therefore is a smaller competition, which is why there are fewer age divisions.  However, if an age division is large we feel it only fair to break it down into smaller age groups to encourage all dancers.  This allows for more personalized attention and a balanced level of competitiveness among the participants.

All levels of dancers are recognized and rewarded for their accomplishments.

  • To compensate for the varying speeds of machines a 5 sec. leeway is provided, after which 1 mark for each 5 sec. segment will be deducted from your final score.

Rules and Regulations

For Studios, Dancers and Parents:

  • Embrace the collaborative efforts within your team, share your skills, appreciate the talents of others, and you will already be on the path to success. Whether as adults or young individuals, spectators naturally admire artistic skills and support others in the arts. This mutual admiration only serves to strengthen our industry. The audience is there to encourage and teachers are their to educate your dancer. Let’s cheer them on!
Competition Day
  • DOORS OPEN one hour before the first performance is on stage. Usually 7 am. Notice will be provided.
  • No video/photo is allowed in the theatre or change rooms! This includes use of cell phones. Cell phones can be in the change room but must be used outside a change space.
  • Re-Dance: If a dancer is unable to complete their routine they will be able to re-dance for adjudication only (time permitting). This will not be accepted for placement or overall standings. This is not the case if it is a technical issue.
  • Deductions can and will be made if the more than one warning is issued. Studios, parents and friends may take photos during adjudications. Choreography, costuming and music editing must be appropriate for family viewing. StarCatchers or judges can deduct marks for inappropriateness.
  • Holding routines or dancing out of order will result in point deductions. The exception is for costume changes, which must be verified by the director. Five routines or 15 minutes will be allotted for costume changes. Dancers or studios causing unwarranted delays to the set schedule may receive deductions.
  • No Communication with the Judges (Oral or Written) by Teachers, Parents, or Dancers during the Competition is Permitted. The Decision of the adjudicators is final.
  • All dancers must perform 80% of the routine, the exception being the production category.
  • Backstage: This is limited to the dancers performing and teachers. No spectators please. Sportsmanlike conduct backstage is key. We understand the excitement and encouragement that the team wants to give, however the backstage space does not permit this and safety is priority. Dancers will be allowed backstage within 2-4 routines of their performance, the exception being if their routine is preceded by a Production or Extended Line where those dancers require additional space.
  • Dressing rooms are shared. Persons found vandalizing or abusing the competition venue or StarCatchers rules will be disqualified and charged damage fees. The studio is responsible for paying this fee.
  • Refund: In the event a dancer is absent, it is the responsibility of the studio director to notify the Competition Committee. An entry fee is partially refundable when a medical note (or photocopy) is provided for the date in question for an injury or illness that they have that impedes performing at the time of the event registered with. This is managed through the studio director and/or StarCatchers directors. StarCatchers is guaranteeing to host a dance competition for your studio, either in person or virtually.
  • Props are to be looked after by the teachers or studio-approved assistants. All others will be asked to leave backstage. Props that could pose a danger are strictly prohibited such as knives, swords, fire, glitter, flour, confetti, or liquid substances and small animals/reptiles.
  • If a set up takes longer than 10 minutes for a production, please advise.
  • The Stage must be left clean by all performers or their crew before the next performance. 5 Marks will be deducted with a stage left to others to clean up after them.
  • Competitors are asked to wear a cover-up when entering the theatre auditorium. Please respect dancers and find your seat between dances NOT during.
  • When entering StarCatchers Dance Competition, directors, competitors, parents and instructors give their permission to StarCatchers as well as Fame In Focus to use their pictures and performance videos as promotional/advertisement material. We know many find this exciting and if we have additional printed material StarCatchers is happy for the dancer to have a copy and will forward it on request to the studio that they are affiliated with.
  • Legal information for studio and parents is within a waiver which all respect and agree upon when entering StarCatchers events.
